New York International Auto Show Blog Roundup

If you’ve been reading JPCN regularly, you’ll in all likelihood know everything you need to know about the cars featured in this post. You won’t learn anything new (not much anyway) although you WILL find links to a whole bunch of sexy pictures of some nice n’ shiny Japanese cars.

Starting with the NISMO 350Z, Autoblog had a good selection of pictures, as did Jalopnik. Both didn’t really have anything new to say, but JPCN noticed when perusing the Nissan spec sheet that the NISMO Zed is fitted with body dampers(?!). Everybody knew about the chassis weld reinforcements, but (front AND rear) body dampers? Engine dampers are available from the aftermarket parts industry and brace the engine against the chassis to prevent unwanted (and energy-wasting) torque twist but as far as Nissan’s body-damping technology goes, JPCN will need a bit more clarification on what it is and what it does before being able to say if it’s a good thing.

Subaru’s new Impreza was arguably the most eagerly-anticipated Japanese car to launch at New York, and it was also the biggest let down for fans of the brand due to its somewhat un-Impreza-ish styling. That being said, the new design looks a lot better in un-photoshopped form and in real life and, while certainly not as flamboyant as it’s predecessors, this Impreza still looks pretty sporting. Winding Road has pics of the car, as do Jalopnik and Autoblog, who also posted a video of the unveiling and some preview shots taken before the offical launch. Stay tuned to JPCN, Subaru-fans, as our Spidey-sense says the WRX model should launch soon.

The G37 Coupe was another car that had J-car fans salivating in Pavlovian anticipation, but unlike the Impreza it seemed to exceed most people’s expectations. Autoblog has posted up a video of the G Coupe’s reveal and Winding Road have some nice stills of the car. As you can see in the pictures and video, the new G’s sexiness levels were so dangerously high that they could only be contained within a special cage constucted from unobtainium-alloy trapezoids. Needless to say, when the cage was lifted the crowd of journalists surrounding the vehicle were literally knocked over by the resultant shockwave of awesomeness and many were taken to hospital suffering from “orgasm-induced internal bleeding”. Well, that’s probably what would have happened to JPCN’s staff had they been there, but you get the point that this is one very nice looking car. The VQ37HR with its variable-lift cams sounds especially enticing and it will be interesting to see what the world’s media have to say about it when some proper test drives are conducted.

The ultra-shiny Suzuki SX4 sedan was also shown at the New York show. While it ain’t no Hayabusa, it definitely looks meaner than your average Liana and it’s apparently based upon the current-model Suzuki Swift chassis, which should make it a pretty zippy unit. Winding Road has coverage of it here, same with Autoblog and Jalopnik. Both Winding Road and Autoblog have attached the official Suzuki press release, while Jalopnik have a full spec sheet for the SX4. While 143hp may not sound like a lot, a weight of under 1300kg isn’t a lot of metal to move these days and if you’re a hoon who cares about getting good mileage, then the SX4 may just be the car for you.

That’s all for now, but we’re sure some more Japanese Performance Cars will pop up at the show. Rest assured, JPCN will tell you about them as soon as we know.
