Mystery Cars: Episode One

Wandering through the virtual auction halls of Yahoo Japan Auctions can sometimes feel like being at some kind of automotive freakshow. From crazy bosozoku bikes and cars to fully-pimped VIP sedans and Wangan top-speed terrors, there’s many a car up for auction that’s been modified beyond all recognition, and so JPCN’s gonna make a little game of it. Every month we’ll be bringing you the weirdest, most outlandish and most customised ride we can find and it’ll be your job to guess what it is. The prize? Complete and utter nerd-dom, and a reference letter from us attesting to your geekiness which you can use to scare impress future employers.

For our first car, behold this sterling example of Yankee/Shakotan stlying, draped over the shapely form of… what? Click on the images to enlarge, and submit your guess in the comments field below!

Here’s some video of a similar-looking car (we’re guessing there’s a gang of these things roaming around Japan) letting loose on a skidpad. If you’re a real JDM car nerd, you’ll be able to tell what car it is from the sound alone.

Let the guessing begin!

It says Nissan on the door sill, so I’m gunna say 180SX?

Yeah I say 180SX, they kept the original shape of the roofline and the rear quarter glass. Its no longer glass but the shape remains the same.

Good guesses guys, but you’re not quite there. Any more takers?

300zx TT

It is a 300ZX - you can tell by the T-tops.

SILEIGHTY?

Z31, (84-89 300ZX)

z32 300zx

We have a winner! It is/was indeed a Z32 300ZX Fairlady Z. The targas are a good clue but so are those doors, with those bizarre horns that I’ve only ever seen on the Z32, the Lamborghini Miura and (to a lesser extent) the Lancia Stratos.

Eric, take a bow. You won! Now, do you really want me to send you that reference letter, or what?

Woot! :-D

If you’re feeling spunky you can go over and post my official JPCN letter of nerd-dome over on the forums at http://www.drift-temple.com (the guys there would get a kick out of it)

But if that’s too much work, I won’t be offended :-)

I am content today knowing that I really am a die-hard JDM car nerd.

Love your blog! Keep it up.
