While aftermarket parts companies have yet to offer a replacement turbocharger/manifold kit for the R35, Japanese tuning house HKS have developed their own turbine upgrade that manages to eke out a few more ponies from the GT-R’s standard-issue turbo.

Dubbed the GT570, HKS’s kit consists of stronger wastegate actuators, an HKS EVC boost controller, de-cat front pipes and aluminium intercooler piping. The concept is simple, and a tried and true method of extracting more power from factory turbos: by keeping the wastegate closed for longer, more energy from the exhaust gasses is applied to the turbine wheel and boost pressure increases, resulting in more power. How much power you say? Try 419kW and a stump-pulling 726Nm of twist.

HKS’s kit is therefore a simple means of bypassing the tricky (and expensive to solve) problem of the VR38DETT’s standard turbocharger hardware, which is unusual in that its turbine housing is cast integrally with the exhaust manifold - thereby making turbo swaps a nightmare. It seems that 419kW is the limit of the stock engine for now: HKS say that in order to use more boost, larger injectors and a beefier fuel supply system will be needed.

The GT570 kit should be available from HKS sometime later this year.
